I’m celebrating my 67th birthday at the Freight. I want to share the music that shaped me as a young artist. I’ll also be serving up a healthy helping of American country blues.
My all-star band will include Tammy Hall-Hawkins on piano, Ruth Davies on acoustic bass, Leon Joyce Jr. on drums, and special guest guitarist/pianist, Brett Bratnatt.
Here’s what the Freight has to say…
Freight favorite Linda Tillery is having a birthday, and she wants to celebrate the music that shaped her as an artist – she’ll be singing songs from the 1960s and 70s by Gil Scott-Heron, Richie Havens, Donny Hathaway, Nina Simone, the Staples Singers, Marvin Gaye, and more, as well as a healthy helping of American country blues. Her all-star band will include Tammy Hall-Hawkins on piano, Ruth Davies on acoustic bass, Leon Joyce Jr. on drums, and special guests on guitar and saxophone.Linda’s shimmering voice has powered many of the Bay Area’s most popular bands over the past four decades. A central figure in the women’s music movement in the 1970s and 80s, she was also a founding member of Bobby McFerrin’s vocal ensemble Voicestra, and currently leads the Cultural Heritage Choir, performing African American roots music. “If I was the heart of Voicestra,” says Bobby McFerrin, “Linda was the soul.” For an evening of soul and spirit and musical magic, come celebrate Linda’s birthday at the Freight!
